God's Precious Word
A copy of God's word, how important is it, of what value is it, and could we live without it? In our country access to God's word is plentiful. It may be more spoken of than it is read, but copies are available in a variety of languages and translations. There is no lack of copies right now. We have them in our houses, motels, and churches. We have freedom to buy, possess, and read it. And what a key it is that it unlocks the reason for our existence, it shows us the One who created us and put us here, it shouts of great and precious promises, and gives us guidance for where we will spend eternity. It has a wealth of wisdom and knowledge in it, though it is written by mere humans, it is inspired by One truly infinite, unchanging, faithful God. The One and only true God.
Today we will take a look at the Scriptures to see the promises presented to us in them. The Scriptures make known to us the good pleasure of God's will to His chosen people. They are an outpouring of God's grace to us, a fountain that keeps flowing in His goodness to His fallen creatures. C.H. Spurgeon states, "They come from a great God, they come to great sinners, they work for us great results, and deal with great matters." There is no taint of stain or mistake in them. In Psalm 119:40, "Your word is very pure" the Greek is “kekatheresmenos,” pure, with a prefix of “ke” in front of it accentuating the pureness even more. And in Paul's word to Titus in Titus 1:2,"God who cannot lie" shows us the grandeur of these words of God that provide so much hope for the believer in the promises given in them.
One of my very favorite all-encompassing promises is in Jer.32:40,41,"I will make an everlasting covenant with them, I will not turn away from them, to do them good, and I will put the fear of Me in their hearts so that they will not turn away from Me. I will rejoice over them to do them good and will faithfully plant them in this land, with all My heart and all My soul." There’s a plethora of promises there, ones that buoy up our drooping spirits at all times. There is not a promise in the Bible that cannot be of some help to us. They come from a creator God to His fearfully and wonderfully made, made in His image creatures, for our good and for our survival. The Bible is a great storehouse overflowing with promises from One who knows us better than we know ourselves.
According to the Scriptures, we have One that is always looking out, planning for, purposing for, things that are good for us. We cannot exhaust the number of promises He has for us His children. We will look at some of them in these blogs to follow, maybe you can find some for yourself in your reading, studying, and hearing of this Word of God. A.W. Pink states, "Not only must I search the Scriptures to find out what has been made over to me by the everlasting covenant, but I need also to meditate upon the promises, to turn them over and over in my mind, and cry unto the Lord for spiritual understanding of them." John 15:7, Jesus says, "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask what you wish, and it will be done for you." A great promise, obedience produces nothing but blessing!
